Inconvenient
History

A Reference Resource

Like the chambered nautilus, culture specific myths start out as small, vulnerable creatures in need of shelter to survive. With time, both build themselves ever larger and more impressive shells, sealing behind them a series of chambers which contain the secrets of their origins. Both the nautilus and the myth must keep those chambers sealed to stay afloat and survive. These vignettes plucked from the historical record offer glimpses of what really was in some of the chambers. When taken together, they provide a profile of their creators which is at odds with the carefully crafted external appearance.

Convenient history is like an ocean's waves, safely bringing the author's thesis to shore. Establishment historians are happy when the water table is high and courses are well-charted. Inconvenient history is the just the opposite. It is the jagged rocks protruding from the depths. It is the uncharted waters. The items contained in this "source file" are not complete essays. They are, to paraphrase James J. Martin, but a modest indication of what can be done using none but materials which are part of the public record.
